| If you’ve yet to hear the gentle vocals and enticing melodies of one Matt Cusson… then you’re in for a few charming surprises. First, Cusson is the very essence of your new-age soulful performer. Second – you need to check out the kind of company this artist is keeping. He attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston playing with folks like John Mayer during one of the school’s most respected events, the Singer Showcase, which highlights some of the best vocalists in the student body. Add in a mentor like Brian McKnight since 2000, and you got yourself a bona fide star in the making. Cusson finally released his first solo record back in December; a testament to the singer/songwriter’s range in writing, arranging, singing and playing. He talks about the self-titled effort, “It goes places harmonically and musically that a lot of artists tend to hold back from. There’s different styles, different arrangements, a little of everything.” It’s the type of collection you can spend an evening with, glass of wine in hand. After sharing the stage with the likes of Chistina Aguilera, Babyface, Bebe Winans, among others, of course Cusson knows how create a presence on stage – “There’s lots of passion on stage all around. I like to sometimes create the environment that we're all just friends hanging out around a piano with some players; it's very laid back, funny, and intimate.” Check out a show and prepare for the second record come 2010. There’s much more below, so get into the XXQ’s. XXQs: Matt Cusson PensEyeView.com (PEV): What goes through your head the minute you walk onto stage? Matt Cusson (MC): Sheer excitement, a little pit in my stomach, focus, and "what's the first song?" Haha. PEV: What kind of music where you listening to growing up? When did you find the love for music? MC: It's all I ever knew or did. There was an amazing melting pot of influences and styles growing up, ranging from Stevie to Djavan to Miles to James Taylor, Michael Jackson to Take 6...as long as it was good music, I didn't care what style it was. PEV: Tell us about your creative process… What kind of environment do you have to be in to work? MC: Honestly, there isn't much of a process until the recording starts. Writing a song comes in so many ways, whether I'm playing piano and ideas come, or I'm driving and a melody pops in my head. I love arranging, whether its vocals or the entire production of a song, but like Quincy Jones said, "Let the song write itself", no matter how it comes, I really do.
