Interview for PRIME

How did you first become interested in music?
Music is all I’ve ever known, and all I’ve ever did even since I was a baby. My mom was a classical piano teacher. So there was always a piano around. I was always banging on a piano. My dad was a choir director/arranger. So that’s part of it. But between all my family I heard lots of different genres. My brother was in to Billy Joel and Rock. My sister was really into Funk, and R&B. My listened to Balladeers and lots of Classical music. My dad was a straight Jazz cat. So I became this melting pot of music and that’s why I like so many styles.

Who are some of your influences?
Oh My God, there’s so many. Michael Jackson, Stevie. Miles Davis is a huge influence, Coltrane and those cats. Oscar Peterson. Djavan, is a Brazilian cat, that some people may not be familiar with. He’s incredible. I like a lot of Gospel. Kim Burrell, I like her. Take 6 is another one. It’s really too many to name. It’s a never ending answer.

How would you describe your style?
That’s my least favorite question. I don’t know if it fits into just one genre and that’s the problem. When we talk to industry execs, they don’t know how to categorize it. If you listen to the album, there’s a lot of Jazz, and Soul. There’s a Country song, a lullaby. It’s a little of everything. There’s an accapella cut too. Just a lot of stuff. I don’t like to be pigeon holed. Miles Davis didn’t like to be called a Jazz cat. He said good music is good music. That’s how I feel too. Like Quincy Jones said, let the song write itself. On I-tunes I’m Jazz, on Amazon I’m listed as Pop. I let them worry about that. I just make the music.

What makes your Music different?
Well one thing is, I don’t limit myself. Some people change what they feel because the label won’t like it or because radio won’t play it. I go there-all the time. I want you to hear something that you haven’t heard before. It’s really musical, and its Jazz based. But it’s ear friendly to everyone.

What’s next for Matt?
Well right now I’m working on the new music, but I’m still doing dates here and there of my music. I’m also still playing with Brian Mcknight too. He has a late night show coming and I may be in the house band. It’s still too early to say for sure. But I am definitely working.
What do you want people to know about Matt Cusson?
I’m easy to find. I’m on Facebook, Twitter, all that stuff. They can find the music on I-tunes, Amazon and even some FYE stores. The album is self-titled. I’m working on a 2nd one, to be out by spring next year. But really I’m just a regular guy who loves music.

Interview: Matt Cusson - Singer, Songwriter and Producer

Source: Blog Critics

Author: Clayton Perry
Published: Nov 20, 2009

While studying in Boston at Berklee College of Music, Matt Cusson instinctively found his way to Harlem’s Apollo stage. And in the years to follow, as a three-time winner of the venue’s legendary Amateur Night, Cusson would eventually perform alongside some of the music industry’s greatest contemporary voices: Babyface, Christina Aguilera, and Norah Jones, to name a few.

In July 2009, Matt Cusson’s jazz composition, “One of Those Nights,” was announced as the 2008 Maxell Song of the Year. (In previous months, the song was unanimously heralded as the winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest within the “Jazz” category.) Quite fittingly, the grand prize was presented to Cusson by his long-time mentor, Brian McKnight.

Upon review of Matt Cusson’s self-titled debut, the accomplished singer and songwriter managed to squeeze some time out of his busy schedule and settle down for an interview with Clayton Perry — reflecting on his Berklee experience, the inspiration behind “One of Those Nights,” and the inevitable challenges that independent artists face.

At what point in your life did you realize that music was going to be a part of your destiny?

To be honest with you, I don't know if there was ever one point that I knew it's what I wanted to do. My mother always jokes that I kicked to the beat in her womb. It's really odd. I started playing piano – I must have been around 6 or 7. Started singing shortly after that. Played the drums for a couple of years when I was a kid. I wrote my first song when I was ten. It's really all I ever knew, and all I ever did.

And when I was fifteen, I sang in a church. And this lady — she must have been in her late eighties — came up to me after I sang with tears in her eyes, and she said, “You were meant to do this.” Maybe that was the point where I was like, “I always loved music.” I always knew what I wanted to do and I never knew how. But that moment kind of got me saying, “Man, if I have to sing in church every week, I'll sing here. If I have to play background for somebody, I'll do that.” And then it kind of grew from that.

Then I went to Berklee College of Music and things really took off there. I started meeting other musicians and it just kind of went from there. It's taken an upward hill since then, and hopefully I'm going to keep climbing.

[ Article ] Singer/songwriter Matt Cusson, a Pittsfield native, to perform at Barrington Stage

Source: The Advocate

By KELLY BEVAN
Posted: 12/09/2009 01:03:30 PM EST

From the moment Lillian Quinn heard Matt Cusson sing in the hall outside her English classroom in 1995, she knew she was listening to something special. Quinn was in the process of casting that year's school musical, "Oklahoma."

"I needed a lead. I needed a Curley and his friends told me he had a beautiful voice," Quinn, the academic dean at St. Joseph Central High School in Pittsfield and the school's theater director, said. "When I heard his voice, I knew he had to be in the play."

Matt Cusson has come a long way since his days at St. Joe - sharing stages across the globe with legendary singers Brian McKnight, James Taylor, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder just to name a few - but he has never forgotten where he came from.

On Saturday, Dec. 19, and Sunday, Dec. 20, Cusson will show his appreciation for his hometown of Pittsfield in two special performances at Barrington Stage Company titled "Matt Cusson and Friends: Home for Christmas."

Cusson's friends include members of the Brian McKnight band; good friend, singer/songwriter and Broadway actress Shoshana Bean; local musician Michael Joseph; and the St. Joseph choir. The performances will feature various holiday favorites such as "I'll be Home for Christmas" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"; songs from Cusson's self-titled album, including "Every Step" and "Comfortable"; as well as the debut of a new song, "Sunday Blues," written by Cusson and Bean.
